Vitamin D deficiency treatment:
Rickets - the most primary vitamin D deficiency outcome - can be easily and quickly treated with 4,000 IU of oral vitamin D a day for more or less four weeks. Connected with that bone irregularities and abnormalities gradually diminish and finally vanish over several months. 20-minute walks with faces exposed to sun are advisable in that period of time. Also, foods rich in vitamin D, such as butter, egg yolks and foods fortified with synthetic vitamin D should be consumed regularly.
Osteomalacia can be treated by eating 2,500 IU of vitamin D per day for approximately three months.
As too high doses of vitamin D are toxic (which may result in the irreparable deposit of minerals in kidneys, heart and lungs) care ends to be taken when treating vitamin D deficiency. Symptoms of vitamin D toxicity include pain in joints, nausea and vomiting. Continued intake of toxic doses may result in death.
