Along with the standard examination followed by a series of questions from a doctor in order to diagnose vitamin B12 deficiency a blood test is performed. The blood test is supposed to verify if a patient has sufficient level of blood cell and if it is too low vitamin B12 deficiency is diagnosed.

Since folic acid deficiency can have similar symptoms to vitamin B12 deficiency it is also usually tested.
